While the commonest cause of male infertility is a low sperm count (the technical term for this is oligospermia), some men are infertile because of abnormal-looking sperm. This is called teratozoospermia (terato=monster). Many infertile men have sperm samples that have low sperm counts, with poor motility and many abnormally shaped sperms.

Abnormal sperm morphology is discovered during a standard sperm analysis to check for male infertility. Poor sperm morphology is due to the fact that the shape of the sperm does not conform to normal standards. The sperm sample is observed under the microscope and studied in a medical lab. During this assessment, the sperm is examined under a microscope to determine the ratio of normal to abnormal sperm. Sperm morphology is measured by a percentage of “normal forms,” sometimes abbreviated to NF, or “normal sperm.” It’s important to note that even healthy, fertile men will produce a high percentage of abnormal sperm. Abnormal Sperm Morphology Abnormal sperm morphology means that too many of the sperm in a sample have an abnormal shape – for example, they might have more than one tail or a crooked head. This matters because having an abnormal shape might make it difficult for them to penetrate an egg.

Abnormal sperm morphology is called teratospermia. Using modern guidelines, a lab will evaluate 200 sperm in a specimen and determine what percentage of these sperm have perfectly normal shapes. Some labs just report the percentage of sperm with normal shapes, while others will then break down the reasons why the other sperm were abnormal.

What it does mean is that either you semen count is low or that the shape of your sperm is irregular. Abnormal sperm has a deformed shape. The shape of the sperm could vary from a defective head to a crooked tail, short tail or even a double tail. The abnormal shape of the sperm head could include an abnormally large and misshaped head, which affects its ability to penetrate the egg.

12 Jun 2020 Sperm morphology — the size and shape of sperm — is one factor that's examined as part of a semen analysis to evaluate male infertility.

2020-06-12 · Sperm morphology results are reported as the percentage of sperm that appear normal when semen is viewed under a microscope. Normal sperm have an oval head with a long tail. Abnormal sperm have head or tail defects — such as a large or misshapen head or a crooked or double tail. Poor morphology, or teratozoospermia in medical-speak, means that the size and shape of the sperm are abnormal.
